APRI - Africa Policy Research Institute

About APRI

APRI – Africa Policy Research Institute is an independent and nonpartisan African think tank. It researches key policy issues affecting African countries and the African continent. APRI aims to provide insights to the German and European Union policy making process on Africa. In addition, APRI aims to provide policy options to African policymakers and civil society actors.

As an independent think tank with strong institutional African partnerships, we seek to link rigorous evidence-based research to policy and practice, amplify existing work and co-create new ones. As a public-facing institute, APRI offers an innovative and engaging platform where policymakers, businesses, media, civil society organisations, and research communities from Africa and Europe can engage with each other.

Our programmes are Economy and Society, Africa’s Climate Agenda, and Africa’s Digital Agenda. Under the programmes, we design research projects with our partners and collaborators. APRI’s core products, built on these programmes, are Policy Briefs, Commentaries, Short Analyses, and Briefing Notes. We will be expanding our offerings, range of products, and introducing new initiatives in the coming months.

Our Programmes
Economy & Society

We seek to understand things as they are – before looking for how to improve them. We want to understand how African bureaucracies work and why policymakers make the choices they make; we want to understand the constraints governments and private sector actors face; and we want to understand how partners can support them without unnecessarily constraining their policy space.

Africa Climate Agenda

Africa is in an untenable predicament: It is the continent that contributed the least to climate change yet faces the harshest of its consequences. As African countries balance efforts to address the climate crisis with goals of economic growth and job creation for the youngest populations in the world, our objective is to understand what this balance means for policymaking.

Africa Digital Agenda

We aim to generate evidence-based research that strategically positions African governments to accelerate their digital transformation. With an eye to continent-wide initiatives and the shifting global digital landscape, we seek to understand Africa’s digital agenda and provide recommendations for how partners can effectively support it.
